Understanding the family

Musk of animal origin has disappeared from perfumery: musky fragrances now rely on synthetic molecules, sometimes joined by ambrette, a plant seed with a musky scent. These materials have neither the sparkle of a flower nor the liveliness of citrus; they give an impression of clean, warm skin, of soft linen, sometimes of powder.

In a musky fragrance, the musks do not stay in the background at the base of the composition: they are its main subject. They pair readily with fruit, powdery flowers and pale woods, for enveloping fragrances that are discreet or radiant depending on how the perfumer doses them.
