OUD satin mood: its world and who to give it to

Some fragrances resemble a material you could touch. OUD satin mood, by Maison Francis Kurkdjian, even takes its name from one: a satin, dense and luminous, woven from violet, oud wood, Damask rose and an amber-vanilla softness. Here is its world, note by note, the house that conceived it, and the people to give it to, based on the notes published by the house.

OUD satin mood at a glance

An eau de parfum from the amber family, composed by Francis Kurkdjian and part of the house's OUD collection. Just five notes, which we present here in three tiers, following the house's description: violet at the opening, oud and Damask rose at the heart, a vanilla amber accord and benzoin in the base.

A house of light and fabric

Maison Francis Kurkdjian was born in Paris in 2009 from the partnership of perfumer Francis Kurkdjian and Marc Chaya. Its idea: to present fragrances as a wardrobe, choosing a creation according to the moment, as one chooses a garment.

The OUD collection extends that idea. It gathers creations around oud wood, that rare and precious material, conceiving them as fabrics: satin, silk, velvet. OUD satin mood is its satin version, smooth and lustrous; OUD, also in our catalogue, offers a woodier, spicier reading.

Five notes, one fabric

The five notes of OUD satin mood, from top to base.

Violet. Its scent is too fragile to be extracted from the flower: it is recreated with ionones, molecules with a powdery, sweet and fresh smell. In OUD satin mood, violet gives the first impression, a powdery and slightly cool sparkle, like winter light.

Oud. Agarwood is born of a wound: infected by a fungus, the tree defends itself by producing a dark resin that impregnates its wood. Oud smells of smoky wood and leather, with an almost medicinal depth. Here it is softened, polished, without losing any of its warmth.

Damask rose. Fresh, honeyed, spicy, Damask rose brings an almost fruity richness to the heart. The pairing of rose and oud is a great classic of oriental perfumery; the house treats it with softness.

The vanilla amber accord and benzoin. The base brings together a vanilla amber accord, composed by the perfumer, in which vanilla takes the upper hand over the resins, and benzoin, a balsamic resin with hints of cinnamon and caramel. Together they give the dense, smooth texture that justifies the word “satin”.

Its world: satin, evening, velvet

OUD satin mood is an evening fragrance. In our reading it belongs to autumn and winter, to candlelit dinners, evenings at the opera, interiors hung with dark fabrics. Its softness is not that of a light fragrance: it is dense and enveloping, like a thick fabric that catches the light.

Satin is a fabric whose weave lets long threads float on the surface: this is what gives it its sheen and its softness to the touch. The fragrance seeks that very sensation, a smooth, luminous surface beneath which you sense depth.

You might picture it as deep velvet in a softly lit room: a scent of precious wood, a golden glint on the fabric. It is an opulent fragrance, but without ostentation, worn like a precious fabric rather than a manifesto.

Who to give it to

To the amber lover. This person already wears vanilla, benzoin or labdanum fragrances and is looking for a more refined fragrance: OUD satin mood will offer the same warmth, with the sparkle of violet and the depth of wood.

To the rose lover. They love rose in all its forms but have never dared an evening rose: here Damask rose melts into amber and wood, more intense and more enveloping than usual.

To someone who wants to discover oud. Oud can be daunting with its smoky, animalic side. Softened by rose and vanilla, it appears here in a more approachable light: a beautiful first encounter with the material.

Before giving it, a few questions. Does the person already wear warm, amber or vanilla fragrances? Do they love rose? Do they prefer evening fragrances to fresh colognes? If the answer is yes, OUD satin mood has every chance of pleasing them.

If they mostly love fresh, light fragrances, or wear little fragrance, it is better to start with a lighter floral or a citrus: a fragrance this dense can disconcert someone who is not used to it.

Wearing it

In the evening above all. Our reading associates it with autumn and winter evenings: that is when its richness feels most fitting, when the air is cool and we dress in thicker fabrics.

On the warm points of the skin. At the base of the neck, on the nape or on the inside of the wrists: the warmth of the skin helps the amber-vanilla base unfold gently.

On its own. OUD satin mood is complete in itself: layering it with another fragrance would risk blurring its fabric.

Away from the light. Like all fragrances, it dislikes light and heat: keep the bottle in its box, away from a window or a radiator.

In the same spirit

If you love OUD satin mood, our catalogue gathers other encounters between rose, oud and amber. Les Sables Roses by Louis Vuitton also pairs rose and oud, with ambergris; Oud Ispahan by Dior sets Damask rose and oud face to face, with no other material; Ta'if by Ormonde Jayne wraps rose in amber, vanilla and spices; Ambre Nuit by Dior brings together amber and Damask rose.

To explore more widely, the amber family page gathers every amber fragrance in the catalogue, and the oud note page every fragrance that contains it.

Our advice

A fragrance this rich is best applied lightly: one or two sprays are enough, on the skin rather than on pale fabrics. And like any amber fragrance, it reveals itself fully after a few hours: give the base time to settle before forming an opinion.
