Love Acqua di Giò? Niche fragrances to discover
Acqua di Giò turned the sea into an everyday fragrance: according to Giorgio Armani, it captures the essence of the Mediterranean, between marine notes, bergamot, aromatic herbs and woods. If you love it, you may also love niche fragrances that share its marine freshness, its citrus or its woody base. We have chosen eight from our catalogue, signed by eight houses. They are neither copies nor imitations, but original creations: for each one, what it has in common with Acqua di Giò, and what makes it unique.

What Giorgio Armani says about Acqua di Giò
For Giorgio Armani, Acqua di Giò Eau de Toilette “captures the essence of the Mediterranean”. The house presents it as the start of the line and its original signature, and classes it among citrus fragrances, in a fresh, aquatic mode.
Its pyramid is published tier by tier. At the top, marine notes and bergamot create its freshness. The heart blends jasmine, cedarwood and rosemary, whose aromatic notes evoke, according to the house, the Mediterranean landscape. In the base, white musks and patchouli draw what Armani calls the fragrance's masculine power. The other versions shift the emphasis: the eau de parfum pairs marine notes, green mandarin, sage, patchouli and vetiver; the parfum brings together bergamot, ginger, clary sage, rosemary, patchouli and incense.
Acqua di Giò now has its own entry in our catalogue, among designer fragrances: Acqua di Giò Eau de Toilette. Like this guide, it relies solely on Giorgio Armani's official page, which gives neither a perfumer nor a year.
Our approach. The fragrances in this guide all come from houses other than Giorgio Armani. None is presented as a copy or a substitute: each was conceived for its own sake and tells the story its house has given it. We bring them close to Acqua di Giò only for what they share with it, based on the notes published by the houses: marine notes, citrus, rosemary or sage, jasmine, cedar, patchouli, vetiver or musk.
We have grouped them into three kinds of affinity: the sea breeze, citrus and aromatic herbs, then a base of woods and patchouli.
The sea breeze
Three fragrances that bring the sea into their composition, like Acqua di Giò, each on a different shore: a Mediterranean island, the French Riviera, a Pacific coast.

Compare on the skin. Wear Acqua di Giò on one wrist and the niche fragrance on the other, then smell them at several points in the day: it is the best way to see what brings them together and what sets them apart.
Think about the seasons. Seven of these fragrances are made for spring and summer; Pacific Rock Swell, denser, carries on into autumn and can also be worn in the evening. Our reading of the seasons appears on each profile.
Look at the concentration. Mirto di Panarea is an eau de toilette, Pacific Rock Swell an extrait, and Fragrance Du Bois does not publish the concentration of Wild Orange; the others are eaux de parfum. For the same amount, their intensity differs: our guide Eau de toilette, eau de parfum, extrait explains why.
Widen the circle. If you also love aromatic woody fragrances, our guides Love Bleu de Chanel? and Love Dior Sauvage? apply the same method. Our selection of the best niche fragrances for men presents other fresh creations, and the guide Discreet niche fragrances for the office brings together light fragrances for every day.
Our advice
What you love about Acqua di Giò may come down to a single material. If it is the sea, explore fragrances with marine notes and the aquatic family; if it is the citrus, the citrus family; if it is the herbs, the aromatic family. Our encyclopedia links each note to the fragrances in the catalogue that contain it.
