Guide
The best niche fragrances for men
A fougère cut like a tailored suit, a dry and noble orris, a blond tobacco, a cloud of incense: niche perfumery offers men far more than the fresh scents found everywhere. From our catalogue we have chosen ten fragrances that their own houses present as masculine, signed by five houses, from the oldest to the youngest. Arranged from day to evening, they are described from the notes published by the houses, each with a portrait of the man it suits.

Masculine, feminine: what the houses say
Niche perfumery has largely freed itself from categories. Many houses specify no gender at all, and no fragrance has ever forbidden anyone to wear it. Some houses, however, clearly present part of their creations as masculine: through their name, the line they belong to or the section of their official website where they are placed.
That is the approach of this guide: the ten fragrances chosen are all presented as masculine by their own house. Amouage signs them with the word "Man", Louis Vuitton gathers them in its line of men's fragrances, Parfums de Marly lists them among its fragrances for men, Floris among its creations "for him" and Creed in its men's section.
On our profiles, however, we never state a gender: we describe notes, families, seasons and moments. Those markers apply to everyone. If one of these fragrances appeals to you, whoever will wear it, that is the only compass that matters.
Daytime freshness
For the office, weekends and sunny days: clean fragrances built on aromatic herbs, citrus and pale woods. This is the territory of the fougère and the aromatic family, two great classics of men's perfumery, joined here by an amber of unexpected clarity.
N° 01Creed
Green Irish Tweed
Fougère · Eau de parfum
- Who it suits
- For a man who loves green, clean fragrances, cut grass and well-tailored jackets. A Creed classic, to wear at the office as well as at weekends, in spring and summer.
- How it feels
- Peppermint, verbena and lemon open on a vivid green, made almost crisp by the bitterness of galbanum. The aromatic heart brings together geranium, lavender and violet. Sandalwood, cedar, ambroxan and oakmoss then lay down a dry, upright base: a fougère of great clarity, fresh without being light.

Sedley
Aromatic · Eau de parfum
- Who it suits
- For a man looking for a bright summer fragrance, fresh without being ordinary. The airiest of the three Parfums de Marly fragrances in this guide, made for hot days.
- How it feels
- Spearmint, bergamot and orange give an immediate impression of an iced drink in the sun. The heart turns more aromatic, between geranium, lavandin and pine needles, like a pine forest by the sea. Sandalwood, ambroxan and musk extend this clarity with a skin-like softness.

No. 89
Woody · Eau de toilette
- Who it suits
- For a man who loves understated classics and eaux de toilette with a British bearing. Created in 1951, it bears the number of Floris's historic shop, at 89 Jermyn Street in London.
- How it feels
- Bergamot, orange and bitter orange leaves open on a cologne-like freshness, softened by lavender and neroli and warmed by a touch of nutmeg. At the heart, rose, geranium and ylang-ylang stay in the background. Sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, oakmoss and musk give the fragrance its bearing: that of a flannel suit.

Imagination
Amber · Eau de parfum
- Who it suits
- For a man who loves the freshness of citrus but wants it deeper, more sensual. Louis Vuitton sees in it a sensual, contemporary masculinity, fuelled by the energy of travel.
- How it feels
- Noble citrus and black tea create the contrasts: the sparkle of zest against the slightly smoky depth of tea. Beneath, a generous dose of ambroxan reinvents the amber accord. Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud draws from it a clear, almost mineral warmth that keeps all its light.

These ten fragrances are only a way in. Many niche houses specify no gender, and most of the creations in our catalogue can be worn by anyone.
If you love leather, discover Tuscan Leather by Tom Ford or 1740 Marquis de Sade by Histoires de Parfums; if you prefer woods, Oud Wood or Gypsy Water, compared with a tuberose in Carnal Flower or Gypsy Water; for a powdery fougère, Iris Debonair, which Creed places in both its men's and women's sections. Our guide The most beautiful woody fragrances for winter presents ten more, from ten different houses. Our guide Leather in perfumery presents ten.
Choosing well, or giving well
Start from what you already love. A fresh scent worn for years, a memory of lavender, the smell of a wood fire: these are precious clues. Our guide Top, heart and base notes helps you read a pyramid so you can find these materials from one fragrance to the next. Nothing stops you, either, from choosing among the most beautiful unisex niche fragrances. If your starting point is a great classic, our guides Love Dior Sauvage?, Love Bleu de Chanel? and Love Acqua di Giò? suggest niche creations that share its materials.
Think about the moment. Aromatic fresh scents suit daytime and sunny days; ambers, tobacco and incense come into their own in the evening and in winter. Each profile shows the seasons and moments that suit the fragrance, according to our reading.
To give a fragrance, look at what the person already wears and the family it belongs to: that is the best starting point. Our guide Niche fragrances to give for Christmas offers ideas by budget.
Our advice
Before buying a large bottle, wear the fragrance for a whole day. Top notes fade quickly; it is the heart and the base that will stay with you. Our guide How to test a niche fragrance explains how to go about it.
