How to test a niche fragrance before buying it

A niche fragrance is not chosen like any other. Its compositions are often more singular, its materials more pronounced, and a full bottle is a real investment. Above all, a fragrance changes on the skin, and what you smell in the first few seconds is only a beginning. Here is how to test one calmly: the formats that let you try before buying, the right way to use a blotter, the skin test, and the patience the base notes deserve.

Why take the time to test

A fragrance unfolds over time: its top notes fade, its heart settles in, its base reveals itself. Judging it in a few seconds is like reading the first page of a book and guessing the ending. Niche fragrances, often built around rarer or bolder materials, readily keep a few surprises for halfway through.

Then there is the skin. The same fragrance does not smell exactly the same on two people: the warmth, texture and hydration of the skin slightly alter the way it expresses itself. That is why a friend's opinion, however reliable, never replaces trying it on yourself.

Samples, discovery sets and small sizes

A sample is a small bottle of a few millilitres, often a spray: enough to wear a fragrance for several days. A discovery set brings together several samples from the same house, to explore its collection or a family of fragrances. A small size, or travel size, is a real bottle in miniature, for those who have nearly made up their mind.

Many houses in our catalogue offer them on their official websites. Here is what we found there in October 2026; these offers change, so check them before ordering.

Sets for discovering a whole house. Maison Crivelli gathers its eaux de parfum in 1.5 ml samples, and offers a similar set for its extraits. Ormonde Jayne presents its “Tasting Menus”, sets of 2.5 ml samples, by family or for the whole collection. Ella K Parfums brings together ten fragrances in 2 ml samples, and Stéphane Humbert Lucas 777 seven fragrances from its 777 collection in an “Immersion” set.

Sets you compose yourself. Histoires de Parfums lets you choose your own selection of samples from its whole range; Sospiro ten creations of your choice, in 2 ml vials; Creed, on its UK website, three creations of your choice. Amouage offers several sets of 2 ml samples, including one that gathers four of its most emblematic fragrances.

Samples and small bottles. Floris and Matière Première offer samples, the latter also sets of 6 ml bottles. For those who have nearly decided, Parfums de Marly offers a trio of 10 ml sprays chosen from its fragrances, and BDK Parfums sets of three 10 ml bottles.

Our advice

Order your samples from the house's official website, or from a shop it lists: that way you can be sure of testing the genuine fragrance, in its current formula.

The blotter: for a first selection

In a shop, the blotter, that thin strip of white paper, lets you smell several fragrances without mixing them on your skin. It is a tool for sorting, not for deciding. Spray once, a few centimetres away, then wait a few seconds for the alcohol to evaporate before smelling: otherwise it is the alcohol you breathe in first.

Write the fragrance's name on the blotter straight away, and do not smell more than three or four fragrances in a row: the nose tires quickly and ends up confusing everything. A break in the open air restores its freshness. Keep the blotters of the fragrances you liked and smell them again in the afternoon: paper holds on to the base notes for a long time.

The skin test: the real test

Once you have made your selection, move on to the skin. Spray the fragrance on the inside of the wrist or the crook of the elbow, on clean skin with no other fragrance. Do not rub your wrists together: you would crush the top notes and rush the fragrance's development.

Do not test more than two fragrances at a time, one on each arm, noting which is where. Then go about your day. Smell your wrist from time to time, without overthinking it: a fragrance is also judged by the way it accompanies you, not only at the moment you breathe it in up close.

Letting the base notes come through

This is the most often forgotten step. The top notes, bright and seductive, disappear first; the heart then takes over, and finally the base settles in, the part you will wear longest. A fragrance whose opening enchanted you may end on a base you like less, and vice versa.

So take your time: smell your skin late in the morning, then at the end of the day. If you still love the fragrance in the evening, that is a good sign. To know what to expect, look at its pyramid on our profiles: our guide Top, heart and base notes explains how to read it.

A simple method, over one week

On the first day, in a shop or at home with a discovery set, smell several fragrances on blotters and keep two or three.

On the following days, wear a single fragrance per day, from morning to evening, in your usual life: at the office, on a walk, in the evening. Write down in a few words what you feel at the start, in the afternoon and in the evening, and whether anyone mentioned it to you.

At the end of the week, reread your notes. The right fragrance is often the one you found yourself thinking about again, the one you wanted to put back on. If two fragrances are still tied, wear each again for a day, or opt for a small size before the full bottle.

Mistakes to avoid

Buying on first impressions. A fragrance's top is designed to seduce: it says little about what comes next. Wait at least until you know its heart, and if possible its base.

Testing too many fragrances at once. Beyond three or four, the nose is saturated and every fragrance smells alike. Better to come back another day.

Testing on skin that is already scented. A heavily perfumed shower gel, a cream or yesterday's fragrance muddles the test. Test on clean, neutral skin.

Relying only on other people's opinions. Comments and rankings cannot smell for you. Use the pyramid, the family and the accords to make your selection, then trust your skin.

Forgetting the shop's terms. Before buying a full bottle, check the exchange and return policy: it varies a great deal from one shop to another.
