The most beautiful unisex niche fragrances

A fragrance has no gender: it is a blend of materials, and anyone can love rose, leather or vanilla. Labels such as “for men” or “for women” are choices of presentation, and many niche houses prefer to do without them. For this guide, we have only kept fragrances that their own houses present as unisex, shared or meant for everyone. Here are eight creations from our catalogue, signed by eight houses, from the freshest to the most enveloping.

What “unisex” means here

We do not decide on the houses' behalf that a fragrance is meant for everyone. Each fragrance in this guide is presented this way by its own house, on its official website: “unisex” at Argos and Histoires de Parfums, “genderless” at Byredo, “eau de parfum mixte” (shared eau de parfum) at Dior, “all our fragrances are unisex” at Initio, the “For Everyone” collection at Floris. Kilian Paris and Frédéric Malle offer their fragrance both in their selection for women and in their selection for men.

For the rest, we looked for variety: one fresh fragrance, two florals, a chypre, a woody scent, a leather and two ambers. The kinds of affinity are Volute's reading, based on the notes published by the houses.

N° 01Argos

Neptune's Trident Extrait

Who it suits
For anyone looking for a fresh, expansive fragrance to share in spring and summer. An extrait from Argos, which the house describes as unisex.
How it feels
Bergamot, mandarin, lavender and cardamom open the composition like a first breath of sea air. Geranium, green tea, orange blossom and jasmine sambac bring a clear heart, before a base of vetiver, musk, labdanum, ambergris, iris and sandalwood. Argos draws on the god of the seas, between calm and storm.

N° 02Byredo

Bal d'Afrique

Floral · Eau de parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves energetic florals, without sweetness. An eau de parfum from Byredo, which the house calls “genderless”, for spring and summer.
How it feels
Buchu, marigold, bergamot and blackcurrant open on a fruity, luminous freshness. The heart brings together cyclamen, jasmine and violet, before a base of tonka bean, cedar, musk and vetiver. Byredo celebrates the energy of African cultures, from dance to music.

Florals and chypres

Rose has never belonged to anyone in particular. These two fragrances put it at the centre, one powdery within a chypre, the other almost bare.

N° 03Dior

Gris Dior

Chypre · Eau de parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves the restrained elegance of a chypre, to wear by day, in spring as well as autumn. An eau de parfum from Dior's La Collection Privée, which the house presents as shared.
How it feels
Gris Dior translates the couturier's favourite colour into scent. Bright citrus opens the composition, then rose and violet lay down a powdery, almost textile softness. Oakmoss gives it the structure of a chypre: a green, woody shadow. Dior cites its notes in the text, without sorting them into tiers.

N° 04Initio Parfums Privés

Atomic Rose

Who it suits
For anyone who loves a frank, luminous rose, by day or by night. An eau de parfum from the Carnal Blends collection by Initio, a house whose fragrances are all unisex.
How it feels
Two roses, from Turkey and Bulgaria, presented almost bare, dressed only in jasmine and a touch of vanilla. Bergamot brightens the opening, then hedione gives the rose its radiance and diffusion. Initio lists its notes without sorting them into tiers.

Woody and leathery

Wood and leather are often thought of as masculine; these two houses offer them to everyone, in very different registers: a woody rum, a leather with oud.

Straight to Heaven, white cristal

For anyone who loves warm, slightly liqueur-like woods, for autumn and winter evenings. Kilian Paris offers it both in its selection for her and in its selection for him.
How it feels
Dark rum opens the composition, lifted by nutmeg. Its liqueur-like softness rounds out, then patchouli takes over, spicy and earthy, before a base of cedar and vanilla. A sensual, frank woody scent, made for evenings.

Leather Oud

For anyone who loves dark, comforting fragrances, to wear when it is cold. An eau de parfum from Floris, placed by the house in its “For Everyone” collection.
How it feels
Leather Oud opens on the smell of new leather, brightened by a dash of bergamot. Very soon, oud sets down its smoky depth, lifted by geranium and the spicy hint of carnation. Patchouli and vetiver give the base an earthy footing, which woody amber notes make radiate.

For anyone who wants a clear, comforting amber, for autumn and winter. An eau de parfum from Histoires de Parfums, which the house presents as unisex.
How it feels
Thyme and nutmeg open on an aromatic, spicy warmth, like a souk in the morning. The heart blends rose and geranium with sandalwood, cedar and vetiver; the base rounds out with amber, vanilla, tonka bean and benzoin, to an almost silky softness.

Musc Ravageur

Who it suits
For anyone who loves sensual, straightforward ambers, for winter evenings. Frédéric Malle's great amber, signed by Maurice Roucel, which the house offers both for women and for men.
How it feels
Bergamot and mandarin give a bright start, softened by a hint of lavender. Then amber, vanilla and musk wind around one another, before a base of sandalwood and musks. The house presents it as the most ardent of its collection.
