Guide

The most beautiful woody fragrances for winter

When the air turns crisp, we want fragrances that warm us: woods, resins, a little smoke, a touch of vanilla. From our catalogue we have chosen ten woody and amber fragrances, signed by ten different houses, which our reading associates with winter. Smoky, velvety or gourmand, they are grouped by temperament, each with who it suits, how it feels to wear and the notes to remember.

Why woods in winter

Woody notes form the foundation of many fragrances. They come from bark, roots or heartwood: cedar, dry and pencil-like; sandalwood, creamy, presented in our guide Sandalwood in perfumery; vetiver, an earthy, smoky root, to which we devote a guide, Vetiver in perfumery; patchouli, dark and deep; oud, rarer, with leathery accents. Perfumers like to pair them with resins such as incense or labdanum, and with warm notes such as vanilla or tobacco leaf.

Winter suits them well. In cold weather a fragrance evaporates more slowly and is perceived more closely; dense, warm materials find their natural place, like a thick fabric you slip on as you leave the house. On our profiles, each fragrance shows the seasons that suit it: all ten in this guide count winter among theirs.

Smoky, incense-laden woods

For those who love the atmosphere of a chapel, a fireplace or an old library. Here woods mingle with resins and spices, and smoke becomes a material in its own right.

N° 01Amouage

Interlude Man

Woody · Eau de parfum

Who to give it to
For someone who loves intense, complex fragrances, incense and spices, and is not looking for discretion. A gift of character for a seasoned lover of niche perfumery.
How it feels
An unexpected start of oregano, pimento berry and bergamot, aromatic and piquant. The heart then catches fire: incense, amber, labdanum and opoponax form a cloud of warm resins. The base of leather, oud, patchouli and sandalwood anchors it all in a dark, enveloping depth.

N° 02Stéphane Humbert Lucas 777

Black Gemstone

Woody · Eau de parfum

Who to give it to
For someone drawn to mineral, spiritual fragrances, dry woods and resins rather than sweet notes. A singular woody scent for anyone who likes to leave the beaten track.
How it feels
Cedar and a stroke of lemon open on a clean, luminous impression. Myrrh, at the heart, brings a slightly bitter, almost sacred resinous note. The base blends incense, teak and tonka bean: a polished, smoky wood, softened just enough.

Oud, the precious wood of winter

Oud is one of the most sought-after materials in perfumery. Western houses have adopted it by softening it, often with spices, rose or pale woods. Two very different interpretations, one hushed, the other radiant.

N° 03Tom Ford

Oud Wood

Woody · Eau de parfum

Who to give it to
For someone who wants to discover oud without its most animalic side, and who loves chic, hushed fragrances that work at the office as well as in the evening. A classic of Tom Ford's Private Blend line.
How it feels
The house lists its notes without sorting them into tiers. You sense a smoky oud, warmed by cardamom and pricked with pink pepper, laid on a bed of woods: sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, rosewood. Tonka bean and amber round it off: a dark wood, but a velvety one.

N° 04Dior

Oud Ispahan

Woody · Eau de parfum

Who to give it to
For someone who loves rose at its most intense, and grand oriental fragrances. An evening fragrance for winter's special occasions.
How it feels
Dior names only two materials, and that is the whole point: oud and Damask rose, face to face. The rose brings its radiance and fruity depth, the wood its dark warmth; together they form a dense, sumptuous accord of great clarity.

Velvety woods

Softer and more intimate, these three fragrances are worn like a cashmere sweater. Sandalwood, orris or violet give them a powdery, almost tactile texture.

N° 05BDK Parfums

Gris Charnel

Woody · Eau de parfum

Who to give it to
For someone who loves skin scents, elegant and understated, neither too sweet nor too dark. An ideal unisex woody scent for anyone torn between comfort and refinement.
How it feels
Fig, tea and cardamom form a green, lightly spiced opening. Orris and vetiver then draw a grey, powdery, very soft heart. The base of sandalwood and tonka bean completes this velvet portrait: a tender wood, like a fabric kept close.

Santal Austral

Woody · Eau de parfum

Who to give it to
For someone who loves sandalwood and fragrances built around one main material. A clear-cut choice for anyone who prefers simplicity to a profusion of notes.
How it feels
Matière Première builds its fragrances around a hero material, here Australian sandalwood. It shows itself clear and creamy, with a touch of powdery orris, then benzoin and tonka bean, which wrap it in a soft, slightly vanilla warmth.

Amber and gourmand woods

For evenings by the fire. Tobacco, vanilla and cocoa warm the woods and give them a comforting roundness, without making them sugary.

Woody · Eau de parfum

Who to give it to
For a gourmand at heart who loves cocoa, almond and vanilla but prefers woody fragrances to sugary ones. An exclusive creation by Memo Paris for Galeries Lafayette.
How it feels

Wearing a woody fragrance in winter

On the skin rather than on fabric. Spray your fragrance at the base of the neck, on the nape or on the inside of the wrists, where the skin is warm. Avoid delicate knits and pale fabrics: some amber fragrances, more strongly coloured, can mark them.

Adjust to the moment. The most intense woods, such as Interlude Man or Oud Ispahan, are best worn with restraint, especially indoors. The softer ones, such as Gris Charnel or Santal Austral, happily accompany a whole day at the office.

Build a small wardrobe. A velvety woody scent for working days, a smoky wood or an oud for the evenings: in winter, alternating two fragrances lets you follow the rhythm of the season, from mornings at the office to festive dinners.

Consider neighbouring families. If you love these fragrances, explore the amber and leather families too: you will find the same resins and woods there, with other accents.

Our advice

A woody fragrance reveals itself slowly. Before choosing, wear it for a whole day and smell it several times, especially in the late afternoon: that is often when the base, the woodiest part, shows itself at its best.
