Love Bleu de Chanel? Niche fragrances to discover

Bleu de Chanel turned a style into a classic: an aromatic woody fragrance, fresh at the opening, warm at the base. If you love it, you may also love niche fragrances that share its citrus, its aromatic herbs, its cedar or its sandalwood. We have chosen eight from our catalogue, signed by eight houses. They are neither copies nor imitations, but original creations: for each one, what it has in common with Bleu de Chanel, and what makes it unique.

What Chanel says about Bleu de Chanel

Chanel presents Bleu de Chanel as the fragrance of a man who chooses his own path, and offers it in four interpretations: the eau de toilette, the eau de parfum, the parfum and L'Exclusif. All of them share one family, which the house calls aromatic woody, and one signature: New Caledonian sandalwood.

The eau de toilette, the brightest, combines, according to Chanel, “the tonic freshness of citrus and the power of an aromatic accord” with vibrant cedar notes, before a warm sandalwood trail. The eau de parfum turns more sensual: the house speaks of amber cedar notes and musky woody notes. The parfum, finally, opens on freshness and then extends into a dense woody accord, still built around sandalwood.

Bleu de Chanel now has its own entry in our catalogue, among designer fragrances: Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum. Like this guide, it relies solely on Chanel's official pages, which give neither tiers of notes nor a year.

The materials Chanel cites for the Bleu de Chanel line: citrus, cedar notes, New Caledonian sandalwood and, for the eau de parfum, musky notes.

Our approach. The fragrances in this guide all come from houses other than Chanel. None is presented as a copy or a substitute: each was conceived for its own sake and tells the story its house has given it. We bring them close to Bleu de Chanel only for what they share with it, based on the notes published by the houses: citrus, aromatic herbs, cedar, sandalwood or musk.

We have grouped them into three kinds of affinity: the aromatic freshness of the opening, the breath of cedar woods, then sandalwood in the foreground.

Citrus and aromatic herbs

Three fragrances that open, like Chanel's eau de toilette, on citrus lifted by aromatic herbs, and that end on a woody base in which cedar holds its own.

In common with Bleu de Chanel
Citrus and an aromatic herb at the top, cedar and sandalwood in the base.
What sets it apart
A heart of flowers (geranium, rose, ylang-ylang) and an oakmoss base: a more floral classic with an older spirit, as an eau de toilette.

1872 Masculine

Citrus · Parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves Bleu de Chanel's aromatic drive and would like it more herbal and sunnier. A citrus fragrance from Clive Christian's Original Collection, at parfum concentration, for spring and summer.

N° 03Roja Parfums

Elysium Pour Homme

Citrus · Parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves Bleu de Chanel's tonic freshness and would like it brighter, with a richer base. A woody citrus from Roja Parfums, signed by Roja Dove, for spring and summer.
How it feels
The opening is a burst of citrus, lemon, bergamot, grapefruit and lime, lifted by lavender, thyme and mugwort. Lily of the valley, apple and blackcurrant bring a fresh, fruity heart, before a very rich base of vetiver, cedar, juniper berries, leather and ambergris. Launched in 2017, it gave its name to the house's Elysium Collection.
In common with Bleu de Chanel
Citrus and aromatic herbs at the opening, a woody base in which cedar returns.
What sets it apart
A fruity heart of apple and blackcurrant, a base of vetiver, leather and ambergris: fruitier and deeper, at parfum concentration.

The breath of cedar woods

Chanel speaks of “vibrant cedar notes”. These three fragrances also pair citrus with cedar, but each in a setting of its own: a volcanic plateau, a Klimt painting, a spirit of adventure.

Sandalwood as a signature

For Chanel, sandalwood “shapes every interpretation” of Bleu de Chanel, and the parfum brings it to the foreground. These two creations also make sandalwood one of their pillars, one through powder and leather, the other through smoke and resins.

N° 07Le Labo

Santal 33

Woody · Eau de parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves Bleu de Chanel's sandalwood and would like it drier, more powdery, almost leathery. A woody fragrance from Le Labo's Classic Collection, for spring, autumn and winter.
How it feels
Cardamom, iris and violet crackle at the opening. An alloy of woods, Australian sandalwood and cedar, then takes over, carried by spicy, leathery and musky notes. Le Labo sees in it a campfire on the great plains of the American West, under a deep blue night sky.
In common with Bleu de Chanel
Sandalwood and cedar at the heart of the composition, with a touch of musk.
What sets it apart
Neither citrus nor aromatic herbs, but iris, violet and leather: a powdery, dry woody fragrance. The house cites its notes without sorting them into tiers.

Moving from Bleu de Chanel to niche

Compare on the skin. Wear Bleu de Chanel on one wrist and the niche fragrance on the other, then smell them at several points in the day: it is the best way to see what brings them together and what sets them apart.

Think about the seasons. 1872 Masculine, Elysium Pour Homme and Kedu shine in spring and summer; Viking and Decision 42 come into their own in cold weather; No. 89, Danaë and Santal 33 span several seasons. Our reading of the seasons appears on each profile.

Look at the concentration. No. 89 is an eau de toilette, 1872 Masculine and Elysium Pour Homme are presented as parfum, Decision 42 as an extrait, the others as eaux de parfum: for the same amount, their intensity differs. Our guide Eau de toilette, eau de parfum, extrait explains why.

Widen the circle. If you also love Dior's peppery freshness, our guide Love Dior Sauvage? applies the same method. Our selection of the best niche fragrances for men presents other fresh and woody creations, and the guide Vetiver in perfumery explores another great wood of perfumery. For a more marine freshness, Love Acqua di Giò? follows the same method.

Our advice

What you love about Bleu de Chanel may come down to a single material. If it is the sandalwood, explore fragrances with sandalwood and our guide Sandalwood in perfumery; if it is the dry woody side, those with cedar; if it is the freshness, the citrus and aromatic families. Our encyclopedia links each note to the fragrances in the catalogue that contain it.
