Love Dior Sauvage? Niche fragrances to discover
Sauvage, Dior's eau de toilette, set a style: a freshness of citrus and pepper laid over an amber wood. If you love it, you may also love niche fragrances that share one of its materials or its contrast between fresh and warm. We have chosen eight from our catalogue, signed by eight houses. They are neither copies nor imitations, but original creations: for each one, what it has in common with Sauvage, and what makes it unique.

What Dior says about Sauvage
Dior presents Sauvage as an icon of its men's fragrance, inspired by wide open spaces: a blue sky above a white-hot mineral desert. The house sums up the eau de toilette in a few words, “citrus and peppery notes”, and details its materials.
At the opening, a juicy Calabrian bergamot, which Dior describes as slightly peppery and zesty, and the spicy sparkle of Sichuan pepper. This citrus breath is supported by ambroxan, a molecule with a woody, mineral scent, by elemi, a fresh, lemony resin, and by woods: Dior speaks of an “amber wood” with a raw trail.
Sauvage now has its own entry in our catalogue, among designer fragrances: Sauvage Eau de Toilette. Like this guide, it relies solely on Dior's official page.
Our approach. The fragrances in this guide all come from houses other than Dior. None is presented as a copy or a substitute: each was conceived for its own sake and tells the story its house has given it. We bring them close to Sauvage only for what they share with it, based on the notes published by the houses: bergamot, pepper, ambroxan, or the same contrast between a fresh top and a warm base.
We have grouped them into three kinds of affinity, from the closest in their notes to the freest.
Pepper leading the way
Three fragrances that open, like Sauvage, on a marriage of citrus and pepper, before each follows its own path: towards incense and tobacco, towards woods and lavender, or towards a very British dryness.
N° 01Amouage
Journey Man
Woody · Eau de parfum

- How it feels
- Sichuan pepper, bergamot, cardamom, neroli and bitter orange open the composition with brilliance. Juniper berries, incense and tobacco leaves then give it depth, before a warm base of tonka bean, cypriol, leather and ambroxan. A journey in chiaroscuro.
- In common with Sauvage
- The three most striking materials in Dior's description: Sichuan pepper and bergamot at the top, ambroxan in the base.
- What sets it apart
- A heart of incense, juniper and tobacco, a base of leather and tonka bean: darker and more enveloping, almost nocturnal.

- How it feels
- Lemon dominates, crisp and sparkling, accompanied by lavender and pine needles that give it an aromatic twist. A hint of black pepper adds bite. Created for the Duke of Marlborough, it is an elegant citrus scent that does not try to seduce, only to remain impeccable.

Ambroxan is one of the pillars of Sauvage. These three fragrances also pair it with citrus, but give it a completely different backdrop: a summer garden, a smoky tea, a cocktail.

Sedley
Aromatic · Eau de parfum
- Who it suits
- For anyone who loves Sauvage's immediate freshness and would like it greener and more summery. An aromatic fragrance from Parfums de Marly, cut out for sunny days.

- Ambroxan in the foreground, beneath a breath of citrus.
- What sets it apart

Compare on the skin. Wear Sauvage on one wrist and the niche fragrance on the other, then smell them at several points in the day: it is the best way to see what brings them together and what sets them apart.
Think about the seasons. Sedley, Moscow Mule and Blenheim Bouquet shine in spring and summer; Journey Man and Rehab come into their own in cold weather. Our reading of the seasons appears on each profile.
Look at the concentration. Rehab is an extrait, Blenheim Bouquet an eau de toilette, the others eaux de parfum: for the same amount, their intensity differs. Our guide Eau de toilette, eau de parfum, extrait explains why.
Widen the circle. Our selection of the best niche fragrances for men presents other fresh and woody creations, and the guide Your first niche fragrance: where to start? helps you find your family. And if you also love gourmands, our guide Love Black Opium or La Vie est Belle? applies the same method, as do Love Bleu de Chanel? for aromatic woody fragrances and Love Acqua di Giò? for marine freshness.
Sauvage described from Dior's official page (eau de toilette); the guide's fragrances described from the notes published by their houses on their official websites (see each profile). Comparisons, seasons and moments: Volute's reading. Guide written with the help of artificial intelligence, from the information published by the houses.
