Love Black Opium or La Vie est Belle? Niche fragrances to discover
Yves Saint Laurent's Black Opium and Lancôme's La Vie est Belle have made many people fall for gourmand fragrance: one around black coffee and vanilla, the other around iris and a sweet note. If one of them feels like you, niche houses explore the same materials, each in its own way. We have chosen nine fragrances from our catalogue, signed by nine houses. They are neither copies nor imitations, but original creations: for each one, what it shares with these two fragrances, based on the notes published by the houses, and what makes it unique.

What YSL and Lancôme say
Black Opium, Yves Saint Laurent's eau de parfum, presents itself as “the iconic coffee-floral”. YSL Beauty sums it up as coffee, floral and vanilla: the energy of black coffee meets a sensual jasmine, described as a white-flower accord, then vanilla lays down an intense base. The house makes it a night-time fragrance, vibrant and gourmand.
La Vie est Belle, Lancôme's eau de parfum, is presented as “the first gourmand iris”, created for the house by three French perfumers. Its pyramid is published: at the top, an iris pallida concrete and a gourmand accord; in the heart, absolutes of orange blossom and jasmine sambac; in the base, a vanilla accord and a heart essence of patchouli.
Both now have their own entries in our catalogue, among designer fragrances: Black Opium and La Vie est Belle. Like this guide, they rely solely on the official pages of YSL Beauty and Lancôme.
Our approach. The fragrances in this guide all come from other houses. None is presented as a substitute: each was conceived for its own sake and tells the story its house has given it. We bring them close to Black Opium or La Vie est Belle only for the notes they share with them, based on the pyramids published by the houses.
We have gathered them into three kinds of affinity: coffee and vanilla, on Black Opium's side; gourmand iris, on La Vie est Belle's side; and finally orange blossom, jasmine and vanilla, which link the two.
Coffee and vanilla
Three fragrances in which coffee plays a part, as in Black Opium, but each time in a different setting: a pastry, a year of freedom, an ancient feast.

Compare on the skin. Wear your usual fragrance on one wrist and the niche fragrance on the other, then smell them at several points in the day: you will soon see what brings them together and what sets them apart. Our guide How to test a niche fragrance explains how to go about it.
Think about the seasons. Mango Skin and Hundred Silent Ways blossom in fine weather; Sugar Addict, La Dolce Vita Di Bacchus, Vanilla Aube and Zafferano come into their own in cold weather. Our reading of the seasons appears on each profile.
Look at the concentration. La Dolce Vita Di Bacchus and Hundred Silent Ways are extraits, the others eaux de parfum: for the same amount, their intensity differs. Our guide Eau de toilette, eau de parfum, extrait explains why.
Widen the circle. If it is the vanilla that draws you, our selection of the most beautiful vanilla niche fragrances presents ten. If it is the iris, our guide Iris in perfumery tells the story of this rare material. For other creations without labels, see also the most beautiful unisex niche fragrances. And if you also love lavender and orange blossom, Love Libre by Yves Saint Laurent? applies the same method, as does Love Coco Mademoiselle? for a fresher floral amber.
Our advice
What you love about these two fragrances may come down to a single material. If it is the coffee, explore fragrances with coffee; if it is the powder of iris, those with iris; if it is the sugary softness, the gourmand family. Our encyclopedia links each note to the fragrances that contain it, and our guide Love Dior Sauvage? applies the same method to another great classic.
