The most beautiful niche vanilla fragrances

Vanilla has a bad reputation among some fragrance lovers, who assume it must be sweet. That is to forget that it can be smoky, woody, boozy, powdery or almost airy. From our catalogue we have chosen ten vanilla fragrances signed by ten niche houses, from the purest vanillas to those paired with tobacco, leather, rose or caramel. For each one: who it suits, how it feels to wear and the notes to remember.

Vanilla, a precious orchid

Vanilla is the fruit of an orchid, Vanilla planifolia, grown mainly in Madagascar, the Comoros and Réunion Island; Tahiti produces another species, Vanilla tahitensis. Freshly harvested, its pods smell of almost nothing: it takes months of scalding, sweating and drying for them to develop their scent.

The perfumer draws from them an absolute, a CO₂ extract or a tincture. Their scent is far richer than that of vanillin, vanilla's main molecule, which is also made synthetically: soft and creamy, but also slightly smoky, woody, sometimes almost leathery. That is what allows vanilla to play so many roles, from dessert to wood panelling.

In perfumery, it brings warmth, comfort and roundness to the base of a fragrance. It is often found alongside other materials with similar accents: tonka bean, benzoin, balsams.

Vanilla and a few materials with similar accents, found in the fragrances of this guide.

Vanilla in majesty

Three fragrances that make vanilla their main subject, and show how much it can change face: boozy, airy or powdery.

N° 01Guerlain

Spiritueuse Double Vanille

Amber · Eau de parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves vanilla without half measures, and warm, boozy evening fragrances. A creation by Jean-Paul Guerlain for the L'Art & La Matière collection.
How it feels
A Madagascan vanilla, worked as a tincture, shows all its facets: smoky, woody, gourmand. Rum gives it a boozy twist, like a ship's hold full of casks and spices. Rose, jasmine and ylang-ylang soften it with a floral breath, before benzoin and cedar extend the trail. The house lists its notes without sorting them into tiers.

N° 02Dior

Vanilla Diorama

Gourmand · Eau de parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves vanilla but wants it light, without too much sugar, to wear by day or by night. A fragrance from La Collection Privée Christian Dior, inspired by a dessert.
How it feels
Dior took its inspiration from a dessert created for Christian Dior at Maxim's. The vanilla here is light and mousse-like, far from thick, sugary versions. Zests of orange brighten the opening, then bitter cocoa brings a dry, velvety depth. An elegant gourmand that keeps its airiness.

Vanilla, tobacco and leather

The smoky facet of vanilla pairs naturally with tobacco and leather. These three fragrances draw very different atmospheres from it: a private club, a summer night in the desert, white suede in the sun.

N° 04Tom Ford

Tobacco Vanille

Amber · Eau de parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves opulent fragrances that get noticed, blond tobacco and winter evenings. One of the classics of Tom Ford's Private Blend line.
How it feels
The tobacco leaf here is blond and honeyed, lifted by ginger and spices, then softened by a dried-fruit accord. Tonka bean, cocoa and vanilla form a rich, enveloping base, like the leather armchairs and wood panelling of a private club.

Wearing vanilla

All year round, if you choose well. Vanilla shines in autumn and winter, when the cold gives it staying power and meaning. But the lighter ones, such as Vanilla Diorama or Sintra, can also be worn in the daytime and between seasons.

Adjust to the intensity. A boozy vanilla like Spiritueuse Double Vanille or an opulent one like Tobacco Vanille needs only one or two sprays; airier vanillas can take a more generous hand.

Explore neighbouring families. If you love these fragrances, the amber family holds other vanilla bases in store, often more resinous. Our guide The most beautiful woody fragrances for winter presents a few, such as Herod and Sky Paris Sky. And if your favourite vanilla is that of Black Opium or La Vie est Belle, our guide Love Black Opium or La Vie est Belle? presents niche fragrances that share their notes.

To give a fragrance, a vanilla is often a safe choice for someone who loves warm scents. Our guide Niche fragrances to give for Christmas offers more ideas, sorted by budget.

Our advice

A vanilla is judged on the skin, after a few hours, when it blends with your own warmth: that is when it reveals whether it is more smoky, woody or gourmand on you. Try it before buying, as our guide How to test a niche fragrance recommends.
