Love Libre by Yves Saint Laurent? Niche fragrances to discover

Libre built its success on a bold move: making lavender, which the house associates with a masculine structure, the heart of a floral, set against a sensual orange blossom on a vanilla base. If you love it, you may also love niche fragrances that play with one of these materials, or with the same tension between fresh and warm. We have chosen eight from our catalogue, signed by eight houses. They are neither copies nor imitations, but original creations: for each one, what it has in common with Libre, and what makes it unique.

What Yves Saint Laurent says about Libre

Yves Saint Laurent presents Libre as “the first lavender floral”. The whole idea of the fragrance lies in a tension: on one side, the sensuality of a Moroccan orange blossom; on the other, the boldness of a French lavender, which the house describes as given a feminine twist. A warm vanilla base then rounds everything off and gives the trail its sensuality.

The house details its materials. The orange blossom comes in two forms: a Moroccan absolute and an accord captured in YSL Beauty's Ourika gardens, in Morocco. The lavender is hand-harvested in Provence and developed especially for the house. The vanilla, finally, is a Bourbon vanilla. YSL sums it all up in one formula: a quintessentially masculine structure around an ultra-feminine heart.

Libre is not part of our catalogue, which mainly presents the houses' niche collections. We therefore describe it solely from the official page of the eau de parfum, which names neither a perfumer nor a year.

The three materials Yves Saint Laurent highlights for Libre Eau de Parfum, according to its official page.

Our approach. The fragrances in this guide all come from houses other than Yves Saint Laurent. None is presented as a copy or a substitute: each was conceived for its own sake and tells the story its house has given it. We bring them close to Libre only for what they share with it, based on the notes published by the houses: lavender, orange blossom, vanilla, or several of them.

We have grouped them into three kinds of affinity: the duo of lavender and orange blossom, lavender on a vanilla base, then orange blossom and vanilla.

The duo of lavender and orange blossom

Three fragrances that bring together, like Libre, lavender and orange blossom, each in a different register: a sensual floral amber, a fruity floral inspired by Botticelli, a luminous water from the Riviera.

N° 01Maison Francis Kurkdjian

APOM

Amber · Eau de parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves Libre's tension between lavender and orange blossom, and would like it softer and closer to the skin. A floral amber from Maison Francis Kurkdjian, signed by Francis Kurkdjian, from autumn to spring.
How it feels
A floral heart balances a bright, aromatic lavender and a sensual orange blossom; ylang-ylang warms the vanilla, which melts into white musks and a woody amber accord. APOM, for “A Part Of Me”, evokes the part of oneself one leaves with others. The house cites its notes without sorting them into tiers.
In common with Libre
Libre's three materials: lavender, orange blossom and vanilla.
What sets it apart
Ylang-ylang, white musks and a woody amber accord: a more enveloping, more intimate floral amber.

Lavender on a vanilla base

Libre owes its structure to lavender, the material of fougères, and its warmth to vanilla. These three fragrances also pair lavender with a vanilla base, without the orange blossom: a musky amber, a seducer's fougère, a honeyed fougère.

N° 04Frédéric Malle

Musc Ravageur

Amber · Eau de parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves Libre's warm trail and would like it even more sensual, without flowers, for autumn and winter evenings. An amber fragrance from Frédéric Malle, signed by Maurice Roucel.
How it feels
Bergamot and mandarin give a luminous start, softened by a touch of lavender. The heart brings together amber, vanilla and musk, then sandalwood and musks extend the trail on the skin. The house presents it as the most ardent in its collection, and lists it among both its women's and men's fragrances.
In common with Libre
Lavender at the top and vanilla in the heart, in a warm, sensual trail.
What sets it apart
No flowers at all: amber and musk dominate, for a more enveloping musky amber.

Moving from Libre to niche

Compare on the skin. Wear Libre on one wrist and the niche fragrance on the other, then smell them at several points in the day: lavender shows mostly at the opening, vanilla once the base settles in.

Think about the seasons. Birth of Venus, Neroli Portofino and Valaya shine in spring and summer; Musc Ravageur, Naxos and Zafferano come into their own in cold weather; APOM and 1725 Casanova suit the in-between seasons. Our reading of the seasons appears on each profile.

Choose your material. If it is the boldness of the lavender you like, start with APOM or 1725 Casanova; if it is the orange blossom, with Valaya or Neroli Portofino; if it is the warmth of the base, with Musc Ravageur or Zafferano.

Widen the circle. Our guide Love Black Opium or La Vie est Belle? applies the same method to two other great fragrances. Our selection of the best niche fragrances for women presents other floral creations, and the guide The most beautiful niche vanilla fragrances follows vanilla in all its shades. For fragrances their houses intend for everyone, see the most beautiful unisex niche fragrances. And if rose and patchouli are what draw you, Love Coco Mademoiselle? applies the same method.

Our advice

What you love about Libre may come down to a single material. If it is the lavender, explore fragrances with lavender; if it is the orange blossom, those with orange blossom; if it is the warmth of the base, those with vanilla. Our encyclopedia links each note to the fragrances in the catalogue that contain it.
