Guide
Discreet niche fragrances for the office
At the office, a fragrance is shared whether you like it or not: in a lift, in a meeting, in an open-plan space. Yet you can enjoy your scent without bothering anyone, provided you choose well and dose with care. This guide explains what makes a fragrance more or less present, suggests ten fragrances from our catalogue that play on transparency, signed by ten houses, and recalls the simple habits that make all the difference.

What makes a fragrance discreet?
There is no official measure of how discreet a fragrance is. Its presence depends first on how much you apply, then on its composition, its concentration, the warmth of the room and the skin that wears it. The same fragrance can seem light on one person and much more present on another.
Some families nevertheless lend themselves better than others to shared spaces. Citrus scents and eaux de Cologne are lively but airy. Teas bring a muted freshness. Clean musks, which evoke laundry or skin, stay close to the body. Green notes, such as fig leaf, soothe rather than impose.
Conversely, ouds, rich ambers, tuberoses and very gourmand vanillas call for more finesse in an office: not that they are forbidden, but they should be applied with a very light hand.
The ten fragrances in this guide reflect our reading of their notes and families, as published by the houses. They are grouped into four moods.

Tea is one of the easiest materials to wear at work: fresh without being sharp, present without being sweet. Three fragrances that make it their subject, from the brightest to the driest.
N° 04Creed
Silver Mountain Water
Citrus · Eau de parfum
- Who it suits
- For minimalist minds who love pure air and limpid fragrances. A citrus scent from Creed, inspired by the Alps, for spring and summer.
- How it feels
- Bergamot and blackcurrant burst out at the opening, with galbanum and orange, like a first breath of mountain air. The heart reveals a tea and a very clean fresh accord, then sandalwood and musk settle into a soft base.
- Why at the office
- A limpid tea over a musk base: a freshness that does not impose itself.

Néroli Outrenoir
Citrus · Eau de parfum
- Who it suits
- For anyone who loves citrus with character, fresh and serious at once. A fragrance from Guerlain's L'Art & La Matière collection, from spring to autumn.
- How it feels
- Neroli, bergamot and petitgrain form a white and green radiance, of an almost transparent freshness. Then smoky tea darkens it without putting it out, giving it a dry, mysterious depth inspired by the great black monochromes where light is born of matter.
- Why at the office
- A sober, dry citrus scent, without sugar, that keeps the elegance of a dark suit.

Thé Noir 29
Aromatic · Eau de parfum
- Who it suits
- For anyone who wants an office fragrance for the cold seasons, dry and leafy rather than sweet. A fragrance from Le Labo's Classic Collection.
- How it feels
- An ode to the tea leaf. On one side, the light of bergamot, fig and bay leaves; on the other, the depth of cedar, vetiver and musk. An extract of black tea leaves closes the composition on a dry impression reminiscent of hay and tobacco.
- Why at the office
- More enveloping than the other two, it stays dry and sugar-free: to be applied lightly, in autumn and winter.

Perfumers' white musk evokes fresh laundry or warm skin. It is the family of closeness: these three fragrances are mostly noticed up close. Fragrances their house presents as musky also have their own page: the musky family.
N° 07Byredo
Blanche
Floral · Eau de parfum
- Who it suits
- For anyone who loves the smell of clean laundry and minimalist, comfortable fragrances. A musky floral from Byredo, for spring and summer.
- How it feels
- Byredo sees in it the feeling of a freshly washed white shirt, the first gesture of a new day. Aldehydes burst out at the opening with centifolia rose; at the heart, peony and violet bloom gently, before a base of creamy sandalwood and velvety musks.
- Why at the office
- An impression of cleanliness, with no overwhelming flower and no sugar.

Mûre et Musc
Citrus · Eau de toilette
- Who it suits
- For anyone who loves fresh fruit and the cottony softness of musk. A pioneer of niche perfumery, created in 1978 for L'Artisan Parfumeur.
- How it feels
- It evokes picking blackberries along country lanes: the juicy berry against the cottony softness of white musk, brightened by a lively lemon. The accord was born of a meeting: in 1977, Jean Laporte showed three perfumer friends from Grasse a musk accord that smelled of blackberry, and the four of them found its balance together.
- Why at the office
- A fruity, musky eau de toilette, cheerful and light.

Not a Perfume
Woody · Eau de parfum
- Who it suits
- For anyone who wants a fragrance that accompanies the skin rather than covering it. The emblematic fragrance of Juliette Has a Gun, in any season.
- How it feels
- Instead of a pyramid of dozens of materials, a single molecule, Cetalox, usually relegated to the base of formulas, takes up all the space here. The result is minimal and limpid: a musky, woody, amber impression, like clean, warm skin.
- Why at the office
- A single material, designed to stay close to the skin.

N° 10Diptyque
Philosykos
Woody · Eau de toilette
- Who it suits
- For anyone who loves green, soothing fragrances and summer memories. An eau de toilette from Diptyque, for spring and summer.
- How it feels
- “The friend of the fig tree”, in Greek, was born of a memory of Mount Pelion, where the path to the sea crossed an orchard of wild fig trees. The fragrance takes the whole tree: the slightly bitter greenness of its leaves, the milky sweetness of the fig, the dryness of its wood, lifted by a hint of black pepper.
- Why at the office
- Green and creamy at once, like the shade of a fig tree at noon: it soothes rather than imposes.

One or two sprays are enough. It is the dose, more than the fragrance, that makes for discretion. Start with just one, on the skin, and add another only if needed.
Put it on at home. In the morning before leaving, rather than at your desk: the top notes, the liveliest, have time to soften on the way.
Do not trust your own nose. After a few minutes, you barely smell your own fragrance any more: the nose gets used to an unchanging smell. That is no reason to reapply; the people around you can still smell it.
Beware of heat. In a heated room or in high summer, a fragrance evaporates faster and is more noticeable: lighten the dose.
Listen to others. Some people are sensitive to fragrances. If a colleague tells you so, choose a lighter fragrance, or keep yours for the evening.
To go further, our guide How to make your fragrance last longer explains how to extend a light fragrance without reapplying, and Your first niche fragrance: where to start? helps you find your family.
Our advice
Keep your office fragrance and your evening fragrance separate. A fresh, light fragrance for the day, a richer one for going out: it is often the best way to enjoy both without compromise.
