Dominique Ropion

Initially headed for physics, Dominique Ropion discovered perfumery during an internship in the analysis laboratory of the Roure company, which steered him towards its perfumery school in Grasse. Since 2000 he has practised his craft at IFF, where he was named master perfumer.

Admired for the precision of his structures and his mastery of white flowers, he has signed several creations for Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, including Carnal Flower and Portrait of a Lady, as well as many fragrances for the great houses.

Career and creations

Frédéric Malle sees Dominique Ropion as a daring perfectionist, a true inventor. His perfumes are like great feats of architecture: like a bridge held up by the balance of counteracting forces, he often offsets excessive doses of powerful materials with subtler, carefully measured accords, until the composition holds up on its own. A good perfume, he likes to say, must always appear obvious.

Carnal Flower exalts the ambivalence of a tuberose absolute at very high concentration: the freshness of a bouquet at first, then its animalic side, tempered by milky notes and white musk. Frédéric Malle calls him one of the world's greatest connoisseurs of flower evaporation.

Portrait of a Lady magnifies Turkish rose in extravagant proportions, with patchouli, blackcurrant, incense and sandalwood; more than fifteen years after its creation, it was inducted into the Fragrance Foundation Hall of Fame.

In Vétiver Extraordinaire, an exceptional Haitian vetiver essence gains an unexpected lightness from bergamot, bitter orange and pink pepper.
