Linda Pilkington

Founder and creator of Ormonde Jayne, Linda Pilkington discovered perfume through a collection of antique bottles. After travels in the Middle East and Asia, where she gathered spices, oils and textiles, she opened an ice cream parlour with unusual flavours in South America.

Back in London, she created candles and then fragrances built around rare materials, with a craftsman's rigour that still guides every stage of production.

Career and creations

As a child in a quiet village, Linda Pilkington busied herself with arts and crafts: hand-rolled beeswax candles dyed black, room sprays poured into antique bottles, recipes for home-made chocolates and ice creams. A collector of antique perfume bottles, she was one day given a full bottle of Madame Rochas; that moment, Ormonde Jayne recounts, sparked a lifelong fascination with perfumery. As a young woman she travelled to the Middle East and Asia, then opened an ice cream parlour in South America with innovative combinations of fragrance and flavour.

Her house, still independent, has been built around rare materials. Ormonde Woman, one of its very first fragrances, crosses a dark forest of black hemlock and violets; Tolu celebrates tolu balsam, warmed by incense. Frangipani unfolds the creamy floral character of frangipani, Osmanthus portrays the small Chinese flower that smells of apricot and tea, and Ta'if pairs the rose of the Arabian city with saffron and date.
