Three fragrances with character for under €150. The first two come from Floris, a house based at 89 Jermyn Street in London since 1730; the third, from Histoires de Parfums, paints the portrait of a scandalous eighteenth-century figure.

- 1740 is the year the Marquis de Sade was born. Davana gives a liqueur-like opening, lifted by coriander and cardamom. Leather then takes over, smoked by birch and softened by vanilla and immortelle.

These two fragrances are intense and gourmand: best given to someone who already enjoys fragrances with presence. If he prefers discretion, a fragrance from the previous tier will be a safer choice.
Choosing a fragrance for him
Start from his current fragrance. Many men have worn the same fragrance for a long time: it is the best clue. Find its family on its Volute profile and stay in a neighbouring register. If he likes fresh scents, think of citrus fragrances such as Special No. 127; if he wears a fougère, Layton will extend that taste with more warmth; if he loves woody scents, Vétiver Extraordinaire or No. 89 will be good choices.
Aim for the season ahead. At Christmas, warm, spicy or gourmand fragrances such as Herod, Althaïr Exclusif or Black Phantom find their place straight away. A fresh fragrance given in December may wait for spring: it will be no less appreciated.
