The signature of Baccarat Rouge 540
Baccarat Rouge 540 was born of the meeting between Maison Francis Kurkdjian and the crystal maker Baccarat, to celebrate its 250th anniversary. Francis Kurkdjian set out to translate the alchemy of crystal into a fragrance built on three auras: air, mineral and fire.
The house publishes four key notes without sorting them into tiers. Jasmine, made airy by hedione, a molecule that smells of fresh jasmine, and the radiance of saffron form the aura of air. Ambroxan, a molecule that recreates one facet of ambergris, woody and faintly salty, draws the mineral aura with dry woods. Finally, a gourmand facet evokes fire.

View the profile : Baccarat Rouge 540Our approach. The fragrances in this guide all come from other houses. None is presented here as a copy or a substitute: each tells the story its house has given it. We bring them together only for what they share with Baccarat Rouge 540, based on the notes published by the houses: saffron, jasmine, ambroxan, or the same amber aura.
We have grouped them into four kinds of affinity, from the closest in their notes to the freest.
Saffron and ambroxan together
Two fragrances that, like Baccarat Rouge 540, combine the radiance of saffron with the mineral warmth of ambroxan, but take them towards more gourmand bases.

Compare them on your skin. On a blotter, two amber fragrances can seem close; on the skin, their differences show after a few hours, once the base settles in. Try two at a time at most, one on each wrist, and smell them at several moments of the day.
Start from the material that draws you. If it is the radiance of saffron you love in Baccarat Rouge 540, begin with Ta'if or Dirty Heaven; if it is its mineral warmth, with Gold Immortals; if it is its gourmand facet, with Althaïr Exclusif or Rouge Smoking. Our note pages, such as saffron or ambroxan, list every fragrance in the catalogue that contains them.
Take your time. Our guide How to test a niche fragrance explains how to organise yourself with samples, and Top, heart and base notes how to read a pyramid. Another amber creation from the same house has its own guide: OUD satin mood, its world and who to give it to.
Our advice
The same amber fragrance can seem very present to one person and almost discreet to another: we do not all perceive amber and musky molecules in the same way. Trust your own nose rather than other people's impressions.
