Niche fragrances known for their longevity

"Does it last?" It is one of the first questions we ask about a fragrance. The honest answer is that no duration holds for everyone: longevity depends as much on the skin and the climate as on the bottle. Two criteria, however, can be checked: the concentration published by the house and the nature of the base notes. Here is how to read them, and ten fragrances from our catalogue that combine both, from extraits with deep bases to eaux de parfum built on resins, woods and leather.

Longevity and trail: what are we talking about?

Longevity is the length of time a fragrance remains perceptible on the skin. It is often confused with the trail, or sillage, the trace it leaves around you. The two do not always go together: a fragrance can stay on the skin for a long time while remaining discreet, or, on the contrary, radiate strongly and then fade.

Above all, longevity is not a fixed value. It depends on your skin (dry skin generally holds fragrance less well), the temperature, the amount applied, where you spray it, and even on your nose: we end up perceiving less of a fragrance we wear often, while the people around us can still smell it. That is why we never give a duration in hours on Volute: it would vary from one person to another.

The two criteria that matter

Concentration. The more fragrant material a fragrance contains, the more it has to last with: an extrait contains more than an eau de parfum, which is itself richer than an eau de toilette. Our guide Eau de toilette, eau de parfum, extrait explains these differences. Note that a high concentration does not mean an overpowering fragrance: an extrait often sits closer to the skin. And when a house does not publish the concentration, our profiles say so rather than guessing.

Base notes. A fragrance evaporates in tiers. Top notes, made of light molecules such as those of citrus, fly off first; base notes, made of heavier molecules, stay the longest. A fragrance built on resins, woods, balsams, leather, vanilla or musks therefore has more material to last with than a composition made entirely of freshness. Our guide Top, heart and base notes explains this mechanism in detail.

Some base materials found in the fragrances of this guide: resins, balsams, woods, leather, vanilla and musks.

The ten fragrances that follow combine both criteria. For each one, we give its concentration, as published by the house, and what makes up its base.

N° 06Argos

Triumph of Bacchus Extrait

Gourmand · Extrait de parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves opulent gourmands, rum and tobacco, for festive evenings. The extrait version of an Argos fragrance dedicated to the Roman god of wine.
How it feels
Saffron, rum, white peach and green apple form a liqueur-like, fruity opening. Patchouli, jasmine, tonka bean and vetiver bring softness and depth, before a warm base of tobacco leaf, amber, sandalwood, musk and vanilla.
Its concentration
Extrait, as published by the house, which presents it as a richer version of the fragrance.
Its base
Tobacco leaf, amber, sandalwood, musk and vanilla, after a heart of patchouli and tonka bean.

The "parfum" concentration

Some houses use the word "parfum" for a high concentration, close to an extrait. Tom Ford chose it for this version of one of its best-known ambers.

N° 07Tom Ford

Tobacco Vanille Parfum

Amber · Parfum

Who it suits
For anyone who loves Tobacco Vanille and would like it woodier, deeper. Composed by Rodrigo Flores-Roux and Shyamala Maisondieu for the Private Blend line.
How it feels
Absolutes of tobacco leaf and vanilla remain at the centre, lit by bitter orange and ginger. An oak wood extract and a whisky barrel accord strengthen their woody, spicy and amber facets. The house lists its notes without sorting them into tiers.
Its concentration
Parfum, as published by the house; Tobacco Vanille also exists as an eau de parfum, with a different formula.
Its base
Tobacco, vanilla, oak wood and a whisky barrel accord: dense, warm materials.

Eaux de parfum with dense bases

Concentration is not everything. These three eaux de parfum rest on particularly rich bases: amber and benzoin, leather and oud, Tolu balsam and incense. They show that a composition built on base materials can have a great deal of presence without being an extrait.

Helping a fragrance last

On moisturised skin. An unscented cream applied just beforehand helps the skin hold on to fragrant materials.

In the right places, without rubbing. Spray the fragrance at the base of the neck, on the nape or on the inside of the wrists, where the skin is warm. Do not rub your wrists together: you would rush the top notes.

On fabric, with care. A fragrance often lingers longer on clothing or a scarf than on the skin, but it does not evolve in the same way there, and some coloured fragrances can stain pale or delicate fabrics.

A well-kept bottle. Light, heat and changes in temperature damage fragrances. Keep your bottles closed, out of the sun, away from an overheated bathroom.

Our advice

Before concluding that a fragrance "does not last", ask someone close to you whether they can still smell it: your nose quickly gets used to your own fragrance. And test it over a whole day, as our guide How to test a niche fragrance explains.

Concentrations and notes published by the houses on their official websites, taken from our profiles. No longevity duration is given: it varies with the skin, the climate and the amount applied.
